Ukraine military responds to journo targeting allegations

Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, has directed the commander of the Ground Forces to conduct an internal review in response to information disclosed by Slidstvo.info concerning alleged attempts to issue a call-up notice to one of their journalists following an investigative report regarding a security service officer.

Syrskyi stated, “Based on the materials published by the NGO Slidstvo.info, I have instructed the Commander of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to conduct an internal investigation. Appropriate decisions will be made based on the results of the official investigation.”

Allegations

Investigative journalists uncovered that the wife of Illia Vitiuk, the head of Ukraine’s Security Service’s (SSU) Cybersecurity Department, purchased an apartment in December 2023, purportedly valued at over UAH 20 million (US$515,000). However, Vitiuk’s official declaration reflects a purchase price of UAH 12.8 million (US$330,000) for the same property.

On 6 April, it came to light that following this investigation, employees of the military enlistment office attempted to issue a call-up notice to Yevhen Shulhat, a journalist from Slidstvo.info who authored the exposé.

Both the SSU and the Ministry of Defence have responded to the new information provided by Slidstvo.info.
